Spring Break '07

Hey guys,

I'm really sorry about the slow service lately. Senior year is hitting much harder than we all thought it would. Most (if not all) of the admins have been incredibly busy.

This week is Spring Break for us, and we're definitely taking some days off. I'm in Toronto, on forced vacation (I get half-hour of computer access a day - on a system that only has a dial-up connection). Several of the other admins are also out of town. Thus, for this week, posting may be even more behind than before.

Hopefully, once break is over, the schedule will calm down and I can start being a real slacker again so I can pay more attention to cleaning up the site.

Mis-Censored

I've been sitting here for quite a while, trying to figure out how much to disclose.

To be honest, this is really stupid.

To be even more honest, I made a bad thing worse.

Since Friday, I've watched the thread on "Class President Suspended?" post continue to grow and become unreasonable. I watched until it got to the point where I was seriously pained. I cheered when someone pointed out:

"I appreciate those who are aiding this discussion by providing clarity and differing rational viewpoints.
I do no appreciate those who are detracting from this discussion through mudslinging, poor manners, and outright lying."

And then they were ignored and I was pained again. This continued for some time, especially after 龙年 commented and a following poster paid no attention to what he had said.

After posting myself, I had hoped that the amount of extreme language would be lessened or outright discontinued. With the following comment, such was not the case. And when I saw who it was... I was seriously annoyed. Given the tone of my comment, and the fact that I signed it, I had thought that it would be, at the very least, regarded. Quite obviously, I was entirely mistaken. And then the Nazi comment was made. I was more than annoyed at that point, since it was an admin that had posted both comments.

I really hate acting without discretion. With the admins, and with the site in general, censorship is a big deal. Twice have I asked admins to reconsider statements they've made. Compared to the thousands of posts generated and the tens of thousands of comments made over the site's history, two incidences doesn't seem like a lot. I don't tell admins what to say or what not to say. I've always thought the admins know that with the admin priviledges, there are responsibilities when they decide to write.

We all come from different backgrounds, believe different things, and have different political leanings. We disagree with one another. Everyone can see that on the posts. There really isn't any particular "tangst ideology" other than openmindedness. The only real requirement for being an admin is responsible behavior.

So when I asked Graffiti Pastry about his Nazi comment, I didn't expect a lot of argument. Some grumbling, yes. A frank discussion, yes. A lot of explaining, yes. But I didn't think it would be a huge issue. [The last time an admin brought up Nazis, they were immediately rebutted by another admin. Admittedly, that was on the thread, not as a side conversation.]

What I got instead where accusations of hypocrisy and high-handedness. He took the comment off, but that wasn't the goal I had intended. Because of our shared preference for reasonability, I'm surprised that we did not reach the same conclusions. (I will not publish the text of our argument without his permission.)

After arguing, I was... quite upset. As I stated before, I don't expect much from fellow admins. I know that everyone is not as huge on the neutrality thing as I am. I know everyone doesn't post with same amount of discretion that I do. However, the notion that I'm forcing certain opinions on the site left me paralyzed.

Reconsidering everything once I'd calmed down, I decided that republishing the comment was the only option. It leaves the users to respond or ignore the comment as they wish and whatever happens, happens.

I shouldn't have said anything to begin with. I should have left a message citing Godwin's Law and letting it die.

Tangst... published? In something legitimate?

Yesterday, I got an email requesting permission to publish excerpts of Tangst in a book on American culture. The purpose of the book is to expose Japanese students to contemporary American culture through the use of blogs. Everything would be translated, with the original English on the same page. Tangst would be a part of the short-entry genre. Only about 600 words would be needed.

Here's the email I got from one of the editors of the book.

I am Dan Waldhoff, an English language editor working on a book to be published in Japan for students of contemporary English and American culture. I have found your writing on the web to be very interesting and would like your permission to include portions of it in a book on which we are presently working.

The working title of the book is “Journals of Thirty Americans Volume 2” and the anticipated publication date is March 2007. The book will contain several blog entries from 30 writers from various locations and demographics. We hope to show the Japanese reader a view of ordinary life in the USAEnglish-speaking countries and the use of English in everyday circumstances.

I was wondering what everyone thought of this and whether or not we should do it. Application Deadlines

So I know I totally missed that two weeks idea of when the chaos of life would end, but I think everything has slowed down a bit now, and the process of finding new administrators is ready to begin.

Since all of the current Tangst admins are seniors, come June, we will all be graduating. This means, of course, college in the fall. As Tangst has been run as a primarily Enloe-based website, we have decided that new admins are a necessary feature to keep current with that kind of news and event happenings. In addition, new admins are needed because, as mentioned previously, we are all ridiculously busy.

Hopefully, we'll be able to stick with this schedule for the entire duration of the application process. If anything changes, we'll be sure to let everyone know, via this blog (and in the later stages, via email).

Application Deadlines Calendar:

Nov. 14-22, Application Creation, Part 1 - Current administrators and contributors work on making application questions.
Nov. 23-30, Application Creation, Part 2 - Administrators compile application questions to create a final application for release and distribution.
Dec. 1, Application Release - The formalized application is sent to all relevant parties and posted on The Official Tangst Blog for public viewing.
Dec. 24, General Application Deadline - All applications for administrative positions are due.
Sometime Dec. 26-30, Decisions Meeting - As many current admins as possible will review the applications and give yes/no decisions.
Jan. 1, Decisions Release - All decisions regarding new admins will be released and emailed.
Jan. 15, Accept/Decline Deadline - All positions must be accepted or declined.

Everything will be posted here (on the blog). Deadline notices will be posted on Tangst between 3 and 5 days approaching.

Open Letter to Potential Contribs & Admins

[I've been receiving e-mails about adding more contributors and administrators for some time now. While it may seem like I've ignored all of these requests, they've been weighing pretty heavily on my mind. I've been completely unable to come up with appropriate responses, especially after considering that the last time a contributor got added without any serious amount of forethought, we had what we amounted to be a crisis situation. Obviously, that can not happen again. Below is a copy of an e-mail I wrote to the latest contributor request. This will be the form letter for any other contributor/admin requests I get from now until around November 1, 2006. If anyone has specific questions, I'll also address those through e-mail.]

Dear -----,

Thank so much for you interest in becoming a contributor for Tangst. Unfortunately, I have no time to screen for new contributors right now. Current admins are in the brainstorming stage of how we're going to get new admins for next year when we all graduate. If you can hang on for another two weeks, I think we'll be done with all the things making us busy and unable to do anything extra regarding Tangst.

My plans, as they exist now, are to finish my college applications. After that long and arduous process, I will have more time and energy to concentrate on Tangst. Thus, I'll be creating an application for new admins and contributors with the help of my fellow administrators for next year's admin pool. This will give me more time to carefully consider the applications and give them the attention they deserve. If you lose interest in becoming an admin in that two week time frame, sorry, but maybe that's a good thing so I know it's not just a fleeting interest instead of a priority commitment.

Over the summer, 龙年 and I discussed having actual positions for the incoming admins. We got incredibly lucky with the admins we tempted into joining. We've got a tech person, literary fanatics, and several night owls which seems to be a combination that works. I don't know how we're going to manage that again, I just know that we'll have to find some way to get as much time covered as possible. This may or may not involve people in other time zones, I have no idea.

As time goes on, and the ideas become more fleshed out, I'll be sending out e-mails and posting more entries on the Tangst blog detailing what will happen, the things we're looking for, the actual responsibilities and duties of being an admin or contributor, side effects of being an admin/contributor, etc.

Updates, Excuses, and Thank Yous

So basically, nothing has been going according to plans. To be honest, I should have anticipated the fact that everything would be pushed back. Not necessary as late as everything is, but I definitely should have known that we wouldn't meet the high expectations we'd set for ourselves.

Obviously, the list (and explanations) of the changes made over the summer have still not been completed. It's partially compiled, but I know that a few other things have changed.

Monthly traffic and update reports haven't been issued since May. While we aren't exactly scrambling over those, we have been working on them.

Posting has been really sporadic of late, I know. Especially at later times of day - anything circa 10, 11, or midnight has the possibility of being posted anywhere between 7 seconds and 7 hours later. It completely depends on who decided to sleep/was sick that particular night.

As most everyone at Enloe knows, something terrible has been lurking the halls and attacking about everything it can get its hands on. And by that I mean pretty much everyone has been sick at some point this year already. Unfortunately, the Tangst admins are not impervious to the nasty bug.

Additionally, college applications are a huge concern for all of us this year (the exception, is of course, Maverick, who is already in college, the lucky bastard). Right now, I, personally, am wading my way through 6. All of which are early notifications. 4 of which require me to write something. The same 4 require teacher recommendations and counselor reports. My life is due promptly on November 1st, November 15th, and December 1st. This does not include scholarship applications (which are the current plague of 龙年). The first SAT testing date is October 14th. I am actually studying (for the math portion, but that's still studying).

So we're all a little sick, a lot stressed, and either sleeping a lot or not at all.

Things will improve after college applications are done and sent out. The workload for senior year is more than I expected, but not like last year, so I know we'll survive. Hopefully all this means Tangst can gain back some regularity after college concerns have been abated.

And a huge thanks to our base for continuing to use the site, in spite of the Blogger problems, in spite of our slowness, and in spite of the piling homework. Your want of procrastination keeps this site alive.

1. Have you ever been in love?

Truly and quite tragically, yes I have been.

2. are you in it now?

I believe so, but I'm not quite sure. It would depend on what exactly love is. Does my heart beat faster and my spirit sing whenever I see her or hear her voice? Absolutely. Will it ever lead anywhere? No, I believe not. She is quite taken.

3. Do you have a crush on someone at your school?

Yes again, but not in the strict romantic meaning of the word. I deeply care for more than a few schoolmates, some of whom I could see myself becoming attached to if the opportunity presented itself.

4. If you were a vegetable, what kind would you be?

One not on life support.

5. What are your religious inclinations, if any?

Religion is a very personal thing, and as such my beliefs do not fit any clearly defined and classically based religion. I believe that there is a higher power, but I won't go any further than that in a questionnaire.

6. If the world were a sandwich, would everything be better?

It would certainly end the world hunger problem.

7. If you could meet any person, who would it be (and why)? Dead or alive.

I would choose to meet myself, five or six years ago, knowing what I know now. I would convince that confused and extremely insecure kid that everything would be okay, and maybe convince him not to make the same mistakes I did. Ah, how my life would be different.

8. what turns you on about the oppisite sex (or same sex) more than anything else?

The uncanny ability they have of making you feel that your existence is worth all the pain and suffering. Just the other day someone was having a serious problem and she came to me because she knew I would listen and help, even if all she needed was to know things were going to turn out all right. Don't know if that made any sense, my meaning kind of got lost in translation I think.

9. Does size matter?

When your jerry-rigged coat hanger is just a few inches shy of reaching the keys you dropped in the gutter, it most certainly does! As for other times, someone once told me that small was ok if you knew how to use it. It was in reference to a four-wheel drive pickup truck, all of you gutter-dwelling minds out there.

10. What's you favorite subject?

I enjoy math the most out of my core subjects. I also enjoy the social political sciences.

11. What is your opinion on Paris Hilton?

I really don't have one. Celebrity gossip is not worth my time.

12. What college (if any) would you like to attend?

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Penne pasta with sun-dried tomatoes and grilled shrimp in a tomato cream sauce.

No paint. Nature has a distinct beauty all its own.

Once, and only once. Since then I have guarded my emotions more carefully, which at times has been a negative reaction. Unfortunately I have neither the time nor the emotional fortitude to discuss the specifics right now. Suffice it to say that I still visit her grave once a month.

25. How many languages do you speak? (and though it isn't part of the question, what are the languages?)

One fluently. As for my second, I know how to say three things; "I speak German not so good," "In the city," and "One more beer, please." Oh well.

26. If you could dye your hair any color in the world, either permanently or temporarily, what would it be?

I can't come up with an answer. I've lived with my current hair color for almost 12 years (my hair color changed naturally when I was about 6) and have grown used to it. The thought of it being anything other than what it is confuses my mind.

27. What single individual is the biggest problem with American society today?

American society has no one to blame but themselves. Rule by the people, for the people.

28. Hypothetically, if you were to come into possession of a hammer, would you prefer to hammer in the mornin' or in the evenin'? Also, Which would you hammer out first: Danger, or a warning?

Well since danger always seems to follow a warning of some kind, I would hope to avoid danger at all costs by refusing to quantify its existence with a warning. And hammer in the morning. Evening is for sleeping.

29. What are your opinions on breakfast food? Good or bad?

Pop-Tarts and breakfast Hot Pockets: Good. The breakfast buffet at Prestonwood Country Club: Excellent. Soggy Branflakes and darkened toast: Not worth getting up for.

The produce section of the local Kroger. Amazing selection. You can get yellow bananas, more yellow bananas, or yellow bananas in a bunch! Ah, the triumph of wholesale marketing.

I used to fancy myself a Unitarian Universalist, because their principles are interesting, but I’ve decided the bunch in Raleigh are liberals who feel left out in the South and are looking for acceptance so I don’t really care much for the current level. I also think currently that UU isn’t really a religion but rather a philosophy, and I think once I get to the bottom of that discussion I’ll find I’m not one after all. The truth is I’m an agnostic who puts faith in the axioms of math and science. By agnostic I don’t mean I don’t believe in God. There is no compelling evidence towards God’s existence nor his non-existence, so I just live my life the best I can. Currently I’d say I like the Catholics the best, because they have a very cemented system ruled by very educated men that, even though they regulate it a lot, allow for change to be made in an orderly way. I also like the fact that they believe that you can go to an okay place if you’re a good person but don’t believe in Jesus.

A Tangsty Renewal

If you haven't noticed, changes have been happening over the past week or so to the formatting of Tangst and The Official Tangst Blog. All summer we've been talking about making updates - we even had a running list of what we wanted to do - but now we've finally put some in place.

As always, we like having a consensus amongst the admins before making any large changes, but since it's summer, and varying numbers of admins have been unavailable at different times, we couldn't really get a good gauge on things. So we (the esteemed 龙年 and I) have implemented a few minor changes that we believe make the Tangst Group sites easier to read, easier to understand, and easier to use.

To be honest, a lot of the new things are purely superficial, such as going from "Posted by" to "Published by" on the bottoms of posts. Others, like cleaning up the sidebar and making it standardized across all the sites, were actually functional. Adding in the Resources section - the links on the sidebar to sites with actual information (Scarleteen, Hopeline, Planned Parenthood) was my favorite. And standardizing the admin contact info was probably a good move, too. When we finish doing everything (after the admins finally get together for voting and whatnot), there will be a huge site update notice, wherein I'll publish the list of changes we were thinking of making and a list of what actually got done.

A couple changes, I think we'll leave up to you, the Tangst users. If we decide on this, we'll put up poll notices. Polls would be open for a week, the same as posts. Or we could just write up a post detailing what we're thinking, and leave everyone to comment on it. Of course, these are just options, but it is something we're seriously considering. Any changes that occur can always be undone - everything is up to you guys, the users. Because everything is for all of you.

One of the biggest issues is about the contributors list and the duties/responsibilities of the admins. We've been putting this off since about Spring Break (which was in March), so I think we've stalled long enough? It'd be nice to go into a new year with this resolved.

Anyways, these are just some of the things going on behind the scenes that the admins felt users should know about. Changes will always be happening to make the site better, so no worries.

If there's something you'd like us to try, or have an idea you'd like to share, leave a comment or send an e-mail (they both go to the same place - my inbox), it'll get read within a day.

Summer Discrepancies

Just a list, because I don't feel like paragraph transitions at the moment.

There were two or three days without a single post. I figured this would happen, but not as rarely as it did. And most days had multiple posts, so the users were more active than I thought they'd be.
Comments definitely weren't disabled after any standardized unit of time. I was really lazy about it - the longest a post went without being disabled was about three weeks. Now they're back to normal because I've been spending more time working on Tangst, so a week is what will be happening. I think the longer time to comment worked out well since everyone was coming and going all the time. At least, it worked well until we got hit big time with spambots. Then it sucked.
龙年 was lazy, too. So there weren't any monthly traffic reports over the summer months. As a remedy/concession, he'll be writing up a traffic report for the entire summer instead. This also works out better than if he hadn't been lazy. The summer months were, of course, slower than the school months. Fewer hits, fewer visitors. The traffic report will promptly be issued at the beginning of September and will contain stats incompassing June, July, and August.

I think that's it, but I'll update if someone remembers anything else.

Well, I thought the post about a guy having sex with a dog was totally hot... Not really. I enjoy the idea of Tangst rather than the actual content of posts. Usually. The fact that I can't recall any specific content proves to me that no post was particlarly fascinating. But I still love you all.

This is hard... for movie I suppose De Sica's "Bycicle Thief" or Yasujiro Ozu's "Late Spring" for their simplicity and poignance... absolute. Watch them, I can't do it justice.
For books... well, I like books. "Shogun" by James Clavell is marvelous to read (long too), and "Shielding the Flame" an interview between Hanna Krall and Marek Adelman, a survivor of the Warsaw ghetto uprisings.

Well, I had been discussing my choice to become a contributor (and later admin) with Box-Box, but I hadn't thought of an appropriate alias yet. I had been brooding over it for a little and couldn't think of anything that pleased me. I wanted something that rolled off the tongue (to me) and insinuated towards writing, or posting on Tangst, or something like that. As if by magic "Graffiti Pastry" popped in my head. I chuckled a little, and wrote it down so I wouldn't forget. I suppose the pastry part made sense to me because they can be filled with anything; sweet or savory, or nothing. All of them delicious in some way. Or awful, it is very easy to make a horrible pastry.

Tonight, Tuesday, June 6, 2006, a sweep of Tangst was performed, resulting in the removal of several comments to posts that qualified as spam, including posts with such one-word phrases as "cock".

Comments were in violation of Tangst anti-spam policy (General Policies, Section E). Comments were removed from posts made to Tangst.

May Site Update

May has been the busiest month so far according to the monthly traffic report. Averaging 15 or 16 posts a day for the first 3 weeks of the month, the admins were kept on their toes with main page updates.

Along with increased traffic, there was an increase in the number of spam incidents, as evidenced by the large number of removed comments and posts this month. While most were non-serious spam, there were two cases of defamation, one of which was slightly controversial.

Real life happenings affected Tangst to the greatest extent in the month of May. The admins were busy with so many things outside the website. Performance was slightly lower because of this exhaustion. Family life, AP review and exams, SATs and SAT IIs, regular schoolwork, oncoming finals, jobs, social lives, college grief, and schedule messes are just some of the stresses we've been working around.

For the first two weeks, those enrolled in AP classes had the corresponding AP examinations, leading to a bit of AP-related angst posts. Also during this period, SD was promoted to admin status after a frank discussion where upon he accused the current admins of being "slow." (Yes, we promote insolence. As teenagers, we have to admire each other for that kind of thing.)

After APs finished, a sense of discontent and ennui fell over the general populace of Tangst, especially the Enloe faction, from the pointless of schoolwork beyond AP exams. "All work seems superfluous now" appears to be the basic consensus.

With the advent of Stanley Cup playoffs and the success of the Carolina Hurricanes , several of the main admins (i.e. SD, thewordofrashi, and I) have been distracted, leading to posts lingering on Share A Secret for a longer period of time on game nights.

No major changes to site layout or maintenance occurred during May - the admins have been too busy to work on anything particularly large or intense.

Needless to say, everyone is just waiting for finals to be over so we can all be free. We're anticipating summer with unmatched glee - we need to recharge.

Over the summer, Tangst will undergo major and minor renovations. 龙年 and I will be tinkering around with improvements for a while. After finals are over, we'll be setting up a copycat site to do all of the work on; Tangst itself will not be immediately affected. Once we start testing new ideas, I'll release a link to the alternate site so everyone can see what's going on and directly comment with any opinions and suggestions.

One of the minor changes is that for the first time since January, I'll be going through and doing some site cleanup - getting rid of dead links, completely removing deleted posts, that sort of thing. I'll also be working on the offline archives again - they've not been updated since the weekend after Spring Break, so I've got a lot to catch up on.

To the seniors: Congratulations on graduating! And getting into college! We'll miss you guys at school, but I love that there'll still be Tangst as a way to connect.

To everyone: Good luck on finals (whenever you take them)! Have fun this summer (recharging, making money, cleaning squirrel teeth, working out, traveling, wearing dorky shorts, chasing small children, whatever)!

Following close on the heels of April , May 2006 proved to be a resurgence of growth for the Tangst community. Once again reaching record traffic access statistics, the school year was rounded out with the highest rate of visitation and posting than another other month in the community's history.

This month, Tangst also acheived an Alexa Traffic Rank of 245,403, a continued increase of 84,764 over April 2006.

As previously mentioned, May 2006 was a time of dramatically increased posting, recording 380 published user submissions, and over 2,000 comments, at a rate of 12-13 new front-page posts published each day, bringing the total number of posts to 1,608.

April Tangst Report

April 2006 was a renaissance of sorts for Tangst. Regaining traffic lost in previous months, Tangst surged ahead to make April the highest-visited month on record, a distinction previously maintained by January 2006. Here is the traffic data collected during the preceeding month:

Monitoring Period: 1-30 April 2006

Total Hits: 10,103

Average Hits/Day: 337

Lowest Day: 08 April 2006 (169)

Highest Day: 30 April 2006 (520)

This month, Tangst further stabillized its Alexa Traffic Ranking at 330,167 (of all Internet websites).

During April, Tangst users surpassed 287 posts by midnight, April 30, pushing Tangst to 1,228 total posts at an average of 9-10 posts per day.

At the beginning of April, Tangst acquired the use of the new Google Analytics service to use when collecting and analyzing traffic data. Google Analytics differs from the in-house data collection stratagies on traffic analysis, though not significantly. A major benefit to the use of Google Analytics is the visual representation that is provided of many different statistics, ranging from origin of the user base to the connection speeds used to access Tangst.

Here are a few interesting statistics that have been noted by Google Analytics:

About 80% of the users Tangst receives each day are returning visitors.
About 92% of users visit from Cable/DSL connections, while around 4% originate from Dial-Up Internet connections.
The top five keywords for accessing Tangst from a search engine are "tangst", "keri judd", "tangst.blogspot.com", "bunsree", and "pchis".

A last interesting bit of information provided by Google Analytics is a pretty aggregate overlay of the origin of the visitor base. Most users noted on this map are recurring, and return at least one or two days each week. (click map for larger image)

Please note that the Google Analytics data is unproven, and has only been in use since April 4. It will continue to be tenatively used and analyzed during the month of May to determine effectiveness and quality before a decision is made on whether to continue using it indefinitely.

As a final note, April brought the promotion of thewordofrashi to admin status, and the addition of the contributors Iced T and Graffiti Pastry.

April Site Update

Tangst underwent a couple of changes this month.

First and foremost was the April Fool's joke that very few people got. Apparently no one checks the date - I personally thought that Tangsters would be slightly more observant than these people, but I guess not. Oddly enough, the sentiments of both sets are eerily similar until a certain point.

The sidebar was updated to better fit user preferences on several occasions over the course of the month. With the addition of the 1000th post, plus the admin and contributor responses, new sections were created and the order of items on the sidebar shifted around some.

Thanks to Enloe prom activities, there were two obviously backdated posts from Saturday, April 8th.

Thanks to Enloe StuCo elections, one post was removed, then put back on the site. This was due to a policy clarification regarding the actual intent of the policy on no "commercial" advertising.

Recently, there have been a number of people requesting to be added to the contributors list. The admins are in the middle of reconsidering the requirements to be both admins and contributors. Unfortunately, we were unable to come to a consensus on the issue before getting smacked in the head with APs and homework. This will be resolved in the following weeks, but for now, we're going to let things stay as they are and no additions will be made. The two contributors that were added this month are long time posters on the site, and are people that I (and the other admins/contributors) know fairly well. That's not at all fair, but it's hard to trust someone you've never met. After the backlash and chaos caused by the Ailill_Angra_Mainyu incident, I've learned to be a lot more... selective with who does and does not get added to the list. It can no longer just be a free-for-all. From what we've decided so far, it looks like we're going to have to get a known location (for time zone issues) in order to be a contributor. Admins, we still aren't at all sure about.

We're also in the middle of making an accessible list of the rules that admins have to follow. Contributors will also have their own list. It's just things regarding behavior - things we are and are *not* allowed to do. Such as delete personal posts that have comments on them, delete comments that have been commented on, etc.

As we look forward to the month of May, we don't expect too much to be going on - there's a two week period where nothing will happen except posting. No maintence, no list updates, etc. Just posts and comments. There will probably be two or three more contributors on the list after the two week break period and the admins figure out the rules and lists and such.

Really, we're all just looking forward to summer.

AP Doom Is Upon Us...

Hi everyone!

This is just a notice saying that absolutely nothing dramatic will be happening over the next two weeks as almost all of the admins and contributors have AP exams now. We've been studying all year for these (supposedly) and now it's time to test how much we did or did not learn.

Because of exams and the fact we're all cramming that last little bit into our heads, the only changes to Tangst are going to be the daily posts and comments. The April Traffic Report will still be posted tomorrow, as Box-Box wrote it up in advance and just has to get the numbers filled in. There will be no changes in the look of the site template, additions to the contributor or admin list, no new links, etc.

Good luck to all the Tangsters taking AP, IB or any other exams!

Hmm, that's a hard one. I like most of the posts by me and about me. Is that weird? Like, I even really like the "Gay is not OK" post (check the popular list). I have this perverse kind of pride that it has the comment record.

2. if you could change your skin color to anything (natural, not natural, patterns, whatever), what would you choose and why?

I think metallicy silver. I mean, all the cool comic book characters were metallicy and silver (think Mastermind? he was awesome.) Chances are if you have silver skin then you also have the ability to change yourself into a liquid, control things with your mind, or you have mad telekenesis or something. I think it just comes with the territory.

If we're talking natural skin colors then I would have to say "Polished Teak." People with skin that color generally have a flawless complexion. It's gorgeous. *once read names in a Crayola Crayon Box*

3. What is your most convincing argument for the theory that all other people are robots?

How about my first choice of skin color was metallic and silver? Actually, I really did used to be concinved that all people were robots. I thought that one day one little boy would be born who was not a robot and that little boy was me. In this imaginary world of fear (I hate my imagination, sometimes) the robots were all looking for this boy so they could transform him to be like them. Certain signs were tell, and they could alternately read or not read minds based on what I was feeling like at the moment.

In recent times, I've read that this is an unhealthy sign of a large ego: i.e., you think as a child that you are completely unique while everyone else is extremely flawed.

4. If you had to date another admin, who would it be and why?

Of course Hannah, if we're talking about date in the "who can you most relate too and would you like to share pretty much everything in your life with." In fact, one time (probably last May) I thought that sexuality be damned and I would actually try to pursue a relationship with her...obviously, that would have been a dumb idea, because we can do everything I would want to do as friends. If we're talking about date date, (like physical date) then I would say PChis or BoxBox just because they're both good looking guys who are smart/witty and smart/insanely nice, respectively.

5. Movie or book that made the biggest impact on you

Hmm, this one is hard to say. I was impacted pretty heavily by "All Quiet on the Western Front" just because of the poetry in the writing. "The Great Gatsby" also had that effect on me. My writing style is developping more and more, I think, because of books? Also, what I read really has an effect on me.

Oh, tricky question. Punch someone in the face, wow. I always have wanted to get into a fistfight--to feel my knuckles push into the soft flesh of someone's cheek, and to hear the thrilling thud of flesh on flesh? It's like a dream.

Without oxygen cells can only do anaerobic respiration. This is not a good kind, because it produces lactic acid, which is extremely painful and could (in large amounts) cause extreme muscle pain. Additionally, it only produces two ATPs. When you do aerobic respiration you get 36 ATPs, over 18 times as much energy. The oxygen breaks apart the glucose so that it can go through different cycles, you see.

If the oxygen weren't permitted to pass through the capilarries in my lungs (which gets there by contracting my diaphragm so as to equalize the air pressure in the organs with the air pressure outside my body) then my life would be very unpleasant.

A fragipan is a layer of highly compacted soil that normally causes a perched water table and impedes plant growth. I liked the idea of a tinted fragipan because it implies that water and air are mixing in this layer of soil in order to oxidize the iron and create redoximorphic features.

Tangst Admins Mark 1000th Post with Q&A

With the approach of the 1000th post to Tangst in early April 2006, Sithgirl rounded up the admins to figure out what to do in commemoration of the event, since the general concensus was that something ought to mark it. The admins and contributors decided that they should accept questions from visitors and post responses once the 1000-post mark was breached, so Sithgirl posted this notice asking for questions from the readership.

I really do not hold a lasting grudge against any of the admins. If I was forced to choose one I'd probably choose Pchis, not for any deep-seated hatred but because he seems like an easy target for my forced aggression. (no hate, Pchis)

Well think about it. Our genes are given to us at birth, when we have no choice over the direction of our life. They dictate our physical appearance and brain structure. Experiences that are given to us lie within a narrow paramater of possible human experience and are only interpreted through the frame of your genes. You cannot escape them and act according to them in all situations. How can you rebel against something that is at the core of every decision and through which no experience can slip? Your genes are the operating system granted to you by your parents. They are the code you can never go beyond.

"no, really. i love rashi" is currently my favorite. I am intensely curious as to who this is, and if they are the same person that posted either of the last two topics about me, and of course, if they are being serious. I have a hunch, but that's all it is.

2. if you could change your skin color to anything (natural, not natural, patterns, whatever), what would you choose and why?
I am more or less perfectly happy with the skin color I have, although sometimes I feel that I'm a little pasty. That said, during the summer, I tan pretty well.

3. What is your most convincing argument for the theory that all other people are robots?
A certain science teacher I had in the eighth grade was a robot. She sounded like one, and had the emotional range of one. The Ligoners here know what I mean.

4. If you had to date another admin, who would it be and why?
Probably Nano, but to be honest, I really never have had any crushes on any of the admins. Not to offend anyone, of course.

5. Movie or book that made the biggest impact on you
Night, by Elie Wiesel probably had the biggest emotional impact on me. Other books you might want to try are A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving and of course, the Bible is always a good read (if you can get past Leviticus). After reading the entire Ender's Game saga, from both Ender's and Bean's perspectives, I certainly do look at life a little differently, so I suppose that qualifies as well. As for movies, while I do watch them for their artistic value, I really could not say which had the biggest impact on me.

Never really thought about it. When I remember dreams though, they're always in color. Yes, I daydream just like everyone else, but the 8-9 hours I sleep at night provide much more time for that. You ever notice how you always seem to dream in third person? Maybe it's just me.

To stay alive? I assume, however, that you meant what drives me? Well, the story goes back a while, to when I was 13 and studying for my Bar Mitzvah. While I was in the process of writing my D'var Torah, which is more or less like a sermon to be delivered by me regarding the weekly Torah portion, I came across a stumbling block, in which the Torah did not completely explain something. I went to my rabbi, who then referred me to Rashi, an acronym for Rabbi Shlomo ben Izhak, who was a famous bible commentator that lived in 11th century France. Since that time, whenever I have had a question regarding rabbinic/Jewish law or theology or whatever, I have consulted his commentary. Thus, as I am commentating on all of your posts, and Rashi is one of my role models, I am thewordofrashi, so to speak.

Probably Apple. You have no idea how good a nice cold glass of apple juice can be.

Forgive me for my lack of imagination, but I would simply take a healthier accentuation of my natural freckles. Something not quite so academically pasty as my current complexion.

You know that feeling you get whenever somebody else says something and you have no idea what to say, or you put your foot in your mouth a lot farther than you ever intended to? A difficult question to answer, and I believe the tagline for the most recent Tuck Everlasting movie. You know, the one starring Alexis Bledel? It was one of the few movies that I believe was significantly better than the book because of liberties taken by the moviemaker. I mean, raising Winnie's age from ten to seventeen really helps with the believability of her promising herself in marriage to that guy in the family whose name I forget. The movie was not bad. The book kind of was. Maybe I just like Alexis Bledel too much, since she's Rory. Then again, in another adaptation of a beloved girl novel, Alexis played Lena and the moviemakers took far too many bad liberties with her story from The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, reducing her emotionally complicated relationship with Kostos to a sort of Romeo-Juliet forbidden love thing that played better on screen than the original book-long denial and slow self-discovery. So I'm not just biased towards Bledel. Oh dear, like a lecture on American History in Dr. Hoffman's class when someone mentions Jews, this discussion has taken significant time out on an unrelated tangent. In any case, I do not think I would want to live forever. Environmental Science makes the future look like suckiness.

For the short list: Baby Goofy Catches a Fish, Emily's House, Anne of Green Gables, The Joy Luck Club, Fight Club, Collapse, Pride and Prejudice, Altas Shrugged, Philosophical Dictionary, Devil's Dictionary, Sleeping Over and Spanish Disco. For movies, the short list includes: almost all of the Disney Classics, The Joy Luck Club, Garden State, Dogma, Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure and Ferris Bueller's Day Off.

I honestly don't know who would take the major leadership role. I'm no good in nature situations so I'd just sit back and see what the others do. There would probably be a struggle in the beginning for control/dominance/whatever, but whoever proves to be the most competent would win support faster - we're pretty much all rationals.
I think either me or Dan would go crazy first. There's no Internet connection on desert islands. Although Hannah might die from lack of flute practice...

Like all other "favorite" things, I have a list instead of one specific thing. Right now, I'll go with "It's the friends you can call up at four a.m. that matter." by Marlene Dietrich. I like it because it holds a lot of personal significance.
At the moment, one of my favorite songs (or at least the one I'm playing on repeat) is Guns N Roses' "November Rain." I'm also really liking Dido's "Here With Me" and "This Land is Mine."
Currently, I'm trying to be as happy as possible. I'm taking things day by day, and not making any really concrete plans for the future (near or far). I've learned from experience that the best things aren't expected or planned at all, they just happen. I fall into bouts of pessimism every now and then, I want to stop. In general, I tend to be a rational realist. I could stand to be more optimistic.

I breathe to keep living, talking, singing, and laughing. Which to me, are all basically the same thing.

Today, I report to the community the removal of six posts from the Tangst main page.

All six posts were authored by newly appointed contributor Ailill_Angra_Mainyu during the early hours of Monday, March 27, 2006. The first four were posted to "Share A Secret." Ailill_Angra_Mainyu was granted contributor status by Sithgirl around 4:00am, EST. Following this, he published (albeit as a contributor, against posting policy) his earlier posts, and followed up with an additional two posted directly to Tangst.

Each of his posts received at least one comment. A few received a small handful (3-5), before they were removed.

During the evening of Monday, March 27, Ailill_Angra_Mainyu acted in violation of Tangst policy and removed all six of his posts, and their respective comments, from the main page of Tangst.

It is Tangst policy that users may remove their own posts, if made as comments to main topics, or if they choose to retract a post made to "Share A Secret" before it is published to the main site. However, the Tangst admins make it their policy to strictly abide by the guidelines established by the General Policies and reinterated in Sithgirl's response to calls for censorship.

Ailill_Angra_Mainyu was formally reprimanded for his actions by 龙年, acting in lieu of Sithgirl, on Wednesday, March 29.

For the record, four of the posts deleted had receipt recorded by Blogger, and are transcribed below. The most recent two (removal #15 and #16) were directly contributed to Tangst, with no receipt recorded, and thus could not be transcribed.

So basically, I hate personal attacks.

I find them rude and just a tad catty. Thanks to this poster, I got mean again.

I will probably regret the rashness of the words I wrote later, but I won't regret the emotion behind them.

There are no requirements to being a contributor; Tangst is really open that way. The list is always open to more members and it always has been. Admin status is harder to get because I have to know you - we've seen what happens when things get out of hand on Tangst.

I just really wish that people would read the things we put up regarding this stuff.

March Tangst Report

During March 2006, Tangst was relatively calm with regards to the quantity of traffic received. Though fewer recorded hits than previous months, continually increasing visitor interaction mitigated this priliminarily misleading factor. Below is the traffic data for the past month:

Average Hits/Day: 240

Lowest Day: 17 March 2006 (100)

In addition to the above statistics, Tangst appears to have finally stabilized in its quantity of visitor reach, with both an equillibrium of hits and the Alexa Traffic Ranking of the site. As of today, Tangst ranks 413,382 among the world's websites in terms of user traffic.

This month, Tangst breached the 900-post mark, reaching 941 posts by midnight, March 31.

On another note, March also welcomed new contributors to Tangst, including SD, SwalesT'shooth, and Ailill_Angra_Mainyu!

Template Changes

Sorry about the mess of back dated posts. The admins are busy having lives. Dan is working on two reports right now, the Monthly Traffic Report for March and a special post about what exactly happened with the whole Ailill_Angra_Mainyu mess. I wasn't here for that, so I'm waiting for the report as well.

Apparently, no one thought the April Fools joke was funny. "Emo eyes" being what they are, I guess. The background is back to normal, and the lack of happy posts keeps Tangst what it is.

I finally updated the list of popular posts, they're all located here now. Since that list is way too long to put on the sidebar, I got rid of that entire section (I couldn't choose which ones to display and which to leave off). There's a link on the sidebar, clearly highlighted by capitalized letters and astericks.

Speaking of the sidebar, I've changed that a bit too. The number of notices has been reduced. Additionally, I've added a site "Navigation" section. The links there direct to the various policies and sections of Tangst. The links under "Neat Stuff" are things related to Tangst, but are not part of the actual site.

Contact for some of the admins is now also in the sidebar. As I talk to more of the admins about releasing their contact info, more will added. The stuff in there now is just stuff Tangsters would have found by clicking the profile links.

I hope everyone had a good Spring Break. Enloe/WCPSS kids start school again on Tuesday.

PostSecret Article

I had to get my weekly PostSecret fix today before I left.

The cards this week weren't particularly striking overall. I sort of miss the time when I first found the site and every week brought something a bit more provocative, interesting, or sentimental. I personally feel like the site's gone down in quality of the cards being posted, but I guess after a while all the secrets seem the same, just with different words.

Anyways, at the end of the post, there was this link to an article in USA Today. The article is more interesting than the cards. I liked learning about his personal philosophy on the site, the cards, the book, the e-mails. I have yet to send in a postcard (I'm scared that it would be posted - the act of making the card was enough for me).

I really don't have anything profound to say. I just wanted to share some thoughts before taking off. Plus, I finished repacking but can't fall asleep.

Spring Break Plans

Originally, I had planned to clean up the site over break. That... doesn't look like it's going to happen. Or if it does, it will be a rushed, 2-3 day job instead of the week I wanted. This is all of course due to the fact I want a social life. Outside of school.

Service on Tangst is going to be slow during Spring Break due to the fact that most of the admins are going to be out of town and/or actually doing stuff besides sitting in front of their computer monitors, patiently awaiting the newest post.

Fixing broken hyperlinks, getting rid of spam on old posts, updating the popular posts list, etc. We're also going to mess with the template a bit anyways, maybe resize a couple of things, use new link designs, etc. If anyone has suggestions, leave a comment to let us know.

I was bored tonight, and so I decided that I would shop around the numerous facets of Tangst for images from the Tangst Con and the like. I came to realize that Tangst now has T-shirts and pants, but no wallpaper! So I decided that I would use my incredible skillz to make some of my own. It's formatted in 1280x854 pixels (the dimensions of my own screen), though I would be happy to make in other dimensions if this becomes popular. Download if you like, criticize if you must. Just remember that I put this together in about 15 minutes.

Alas, I am too slow.

I did not get a picture of everyone's Tangst gear yesterday. It made me sad. However, the pics I did get, I'm happy with. Most of the pics are on either here or on Facebook. Or both.

Tangst has been alive for roughly six months now. Six months ago, I had no idea how fast or how far Tangst would spread. I just thought it would be a fun thing to do with my friends.

I still haven't gotten all the admin pics yet, but I'm putting them up anyways.* I'm tired of waiting, plus, I finally have one that I like of myself. Once again, they're both here and on Facebook.

Sorry this is late. I meant to do this, and a lot of other things, this weekend, but I got really busy and bogged down with personal stuff.

Friday afternoon, as I'm sure everyone in the Raleigh/Cary/Apex area remembers, was beautiful. The temperature was just right, the sun had finally come out, and the wind was the soft kind - just enough to tease your hair, but not enough to whip it around your head.

I got there just at 3:30; PChis had driven me home first so I could change and grab snackage (Fruit Roll-Ups, Doritos, Cheetos, and various sodas). Most of the other admins were there already, they had found the right shelter (which I had forgotten completely) and were hanging out on the monkey bars in the playground. Tasha had taken most of the admin pics* already.

TangstCon began with everyone sitting around pigging out on junk foods and telling random jokes, sprawled across several picnic tables. There were many repeats of "Tangsters do it anonymously!!!" before we got down to the serious business of shirts and jeans. I think everyone's turned out really well. I think I will get more people to write on my jeans tomorrow, while I'm wearing them to school. I must find my black Sharpie again.

Several people came late, while others left early. Most of the admins were there at some point (which reminds me that we're still looking for admins, if anyone is interested; I'm thinking of taking another break after Spring Break). When the population dwindled down to the final six, we packed everything away and spent the rest of the time at the playground, hogging the swings and a section of the monkey bars.

So lots of fun, lots of stupid jokes, lots of Fruit Roll-Ups, lots of laughter. There's nothing quite like hanging out with your best friends on a really beautiful day.

*The pics will posted on here once we get all the admins. There are still a couple of admins who haven't had their pic taken yet. Tasha and I are hunting them down.

Site Archiving

For about two months now, Tangst has been on the policy of showing published posts on the main site for 3 days before shifting them to archives. Starting this week, that has changed.

Beginning this week, published posts are shown for 7 days, while comments are still automatically closed on post discussions at the end of the 7th day of a topic's existence.

Related to this, the archives references module in the navigation column has been changed to reflect the new system, displaying weekly links, instead of the old monthly system. It is broken automatically into two even-length columns to prevent an endless list of archive dates.

On a final note, it's been a fabulous weekend here in Raleigh in terms of weather, so I hope everybody got (or will still get) a chance to be out and enjoying it!

The Countdown Begins...

Not that I just stole that phrase from Doctor Who or anything...

Tangst Con is exactly one week from today, although since it's past 8 now, the convention will be over and we will all be sitting at home, uploading pics for all of those who couldn't make it.

Final details are as follows:

When: Friday, March 10 @ 3:30pm
Where: Pullen Park, Shelter #6 (that may change). Here's a map (pdf). If you can't find it, just gather around the carousel - the admins will be looking for you.

Remember to bring your item of clothing, list of quotes, and $5. If you can, bring permanent markers/fabric pens too.

If you're an underclassman, and thus have no ride, RSVP here or through e-mail that you want to go (you must include your name). The admins are working on the transportation issue right now.

February Tangst Report

February 2006 was a time of growth and stabilization for Tangst. Below is the report on overall traffic for the community during the past month:

Monitoring Period: 1-28 February 2006

Total Hits: 8220

Average Hits/Day: 294

Lowest Day: 24 February 2006 (162)

Highest Day: 12 February 2006 (578)

To give a brief overview, Tangst recevied fewer hits than were reported by the January Traffic Report, though this may be attributable to the decreased length of the reporting period. On the whole, traffic was more consistent in levels, and access rates appeared to be much less prone to fluctuation than in previous months.

On a related note, Tangst has welcomed an increase in its user base! Per the blind system of analysis outlined in the last traffic report, the following data has been collected to show geographical visitor representation:

Nations: 37

American States: 34

Canadian Provinces: 7

Local Regions (Total): 234

In other news, Tangst welcomed its newest admins, Nanotyrannus and thewordofrashi!

On 9 February 2006, The Et Cetera Clause was created to house literature and poetry posted to Tangst, and to act as an outlet for tangsty literary critiques.

A final note of discussion is the perception of Tangst by the rest of the web.

At the time this report was written, Tangst is ranked 764,848 (of all the millions of websites!) by the Alexa Traffic Ranking. Over the last weeks, this rank has increased dramatically as the popularity and traffic to the site has increased and stabilized, as reported earlier.

Somewhat related to the traffic the site has received, Tangst has published its 700^th user submission at 11:37 PM on 28 February 2006.

From another angle, Google and MSN Search have finally indexed Tangst as the best result for "tangst." This means that you can go to http://google.com/, enter "tangst," click "I'm Feeling Lucky," and tada, you end up at the Tangst we know and love.

Hurrah for Tangst!
