Update on the Wiki.

Yeah, we're getting booted off. I think we've all resigned ourselves to that fate. It doesn't bother me as much as it did before - trying to salvage lost causes is only something I'll attempt in real life, when I can meet people face to face. There's something terribly impersonal about the internet and forums. Even Tangst, with it's sense of community, leaves me as a bit cold sometimes. It's a lot better than some other sites, but does lack that last little thing that meeting people brings.

Anyways, because of what the discussion has started to deteriorate down to, I think I should just send that one guy, the one who put the article up for deletion, a nice long e-mail explaining why he sucks.

Just kidding.

I do want to send him an e-mail though, a nice long eloquent one, about why, if he's just going to delete it anyways, he should go ahead and do so. I mean, he's not been so bad, but one of his fellow wiki admins took a potshot at a poster. That's... not cool in my book. In anyone's book, really. I mean, does being petty really bring that much joy to his life? I guess it would considering he's a copy editor.

Quite basically, I'm tired of getting all of those comments saying that we just aren't good enough. While I have a more than a healthy amount of self-esteem, enough of the Tangst posters don't. Debating over whether or not something they love (I'm flattering myself here) qualifies for a wiki article probably isn't helping them as they watch this relatively minor struggle. I'm incredibly protective of the people and things I care about. Watching the discussion now just makes me sad. When a Tangster goes, argues a valid point, and then gets shot down by a guy who's favorite self-quote is "It's clean-up duty, mopping up after the dishonest, incompetent, and fanatical. Can't imagine why you'd have a problem with that," I'm going to have problems with that.

I acknowledge it's a poor argument. I know poor arguments, I mock enough people at debate tournaments for them. I could care less what the wiki people think about the site. But don't they dare mess with my posters again. Abuse of power? Yes. Insulting? Greatly so. Reminiscent of elementary school? Indeed. Isn't the point to discuss the site, not discuss the discussion?

Bah, I think I should write that e-mail though, to end this madness. I hate uncertainty.

What do all of you think?

Sure, write the email. Maybe another to the guy you mentioned. I saw his Wikipedia profile, and I agree, he comes across as arrogant and pompus.

The way he spins it in his profile, he's a boon to the Wiki community, and I understand people like him are necessary, but his jab at at the Tangster was inflamatory.

Back to the main target though. The profile of the instigator of the deletion is kind of annoying. Especially the header tagline, "Welcome to the home of an eternal infinite optimist."

That all being said, I appreciate the neutrality of some of the Wiki "editors." Its nice to see the majority of them agreeing per the terms of the policies at Wikipedia. While there are some flamers and trolls, most of them agree to the deletion in the spirit of the law.

Coming back to the email: Maybe keep the "go ahead and delete it already" part out of it. The Wikipedia policy in place is to allow 5 days (I think) of debate and discussion. If an editor preempts that, s/he can receive a bad rep for flaunting community policies.

The article was a nice experiment all in all, but it apparently wasn't its time.

That's not to stop Tangst, however. There's a lot of neat things we are doing and can do with it, regardless of the Wikipedia rejection. And actually, that's provided an interesting factor in spurring some innovation, so there's a bit of a silver lining.
