Removed two comments on two different posts today.

I refuse to copy and paste the comments here because it was just a bunch of nonsense. Random words in capital letters like "JACKSON TRIAL" and "VIAGRA." No hyperlinked usernames, though.

Both comments were in violation of the Tangst anti-spam policy (General Policies, Section E). These comments were removed from Tangst proper.

We finally have pictures of the very first Tangst t-shirt!!!

Simple, but I think it gets the point across...

1. Get a marker and write your message.

2. Get input from other people to make sure nothing's missing.

3. Ta da! You're done!

P.S. Just remember to be emo enough about it.

Admin FAQs

by sithgirl (10:57 PM)
Wednesday, February 22, 2006

Lots of interest has been raised about Tangst admins (how to become one, what do they do, perks, etc) in the past, and the issue has come up again. So here are some answers to the most frequently asked questions. If I miss any, just leave a comment, and someone will edit the post to include the question and answer.

Q: What is the difference between being a Tangst admin and being a listed contributor?
A:
Contributors are just people with Blogger user IDs that wanted to be put on the list. They don't have any responsibilities. Tangst admins actually have to do things, like move comments on the "Share A Secret" post to the main page.

Q: How do I become a contributor?
A:
In order to become a contributor, simply send me an e-mail with your e-mail address (or the e-mail address you want to use). I'll send you an invite to the blog. All you'd have to do is accept.

Q: How do I become an admin?
A:
Becoming an admin is slightly harder. Previous to this, I hadn't really thought of the qualities of all the admins. The first one that comes to mind is that I know all of the admins in real life. That being said, it's the only way I know they're trustworthy. I've known all the admins for at least as long as Tangst has been running, most for longer. I have to be able to trust the admins. They have only slightly less control over the site than I do.

Q: What are the perks of being a contributor?
A:
There really aren't that many besides being able to post directly to the main page; you don't have to wait for one of the admins to see your post in order for it to be shown. This is really great if you're in another time zone (anything besides EST). The admins have been trying to sleep recently, so most posts that go up past midnight don't get posted until at least 5 or 6 hours later. This is especially true on the weekends. So I guess the main perk is that you get your own ID.

Q: What are the perks of being an admin?
A:
You basically get a lot of control over the site. Other admins are the reason I started the archives. Admins have access to the template, all the posts, settings, etc. That's why I shudder at the thought of a true admin war. It's also why I absolutely have to trust the people I made admins. They could completely destroy the site and delete everything that goes along with it.
Oh, I was supposed to be discussing perks. The unconditional love is nice. Bantering with the other admins because you know who they are is good too.

Q: Just because I'm curious, who are the current admins?
A:
The list of current admins are sithgirl, PChis, 龙年, knight_racer979, DoctorAnonymous, TintedFragipan, Hannah, thewordofrashi, SD, Nanotyrannus, SwalesT'shooth, and Graffiti Pastry.

Admin rules will be posted later.

Tangster Pride - Enloe Style

by sithgirl (12:08 AM)
Wednesday, February 22, 2006

I should be studying for my Ogren test (I finished my Achenbach paper already), but there are only so many times I can read "humans are the devil's spawn, come to kill the Earth" before I get bored.

So instead, I'm posting these pictures of Tangst graffiti around Enloe. While I don't condone or condemn it, I still think it's pretty funny.

If anyone else happens to stumble upon things like these, send them to me at my.tangst@gmail.com so I can post them.

Official Announcement/Invitation...Thingy

by sithgirl (11:30 PM)
Sunday, February 19, 2006

That was going to be serious, but then I had some tea and decided against it.

As I stated in the initial post about Tangst Con, plans are being set in motion still, but all of the basics have already been decided. So here is the open invitation.

Who's Invited: All Tangsters (seriously, even if you don't live in the Triangle area and want to make the trek out, be our guests).

What We're Doing: Making tangsty clothes, eating pizza.

When We're Doing This:
Date - Friday, March 10th, 2006.
Time - 3:30pm until people want to leave or the admins want to go home and sleep. Or check Tangst...

Where We're Doing This: Pullen Park, Raleigh, North Carolina, USA. (Check for updates as to the exact location and directions.)

Why We're Doing This: For admins to meet Tangsters. For Tangsters to meet admins. For Tangsters to meet other Tangsters. To gush over poetry. To gripe about how much school sucked that day. To make new friends. Honestly though, I just want my tangsty jeans :)

How Much This Going to Cost: $5/person to cover pizza, drinks, markers, etc.

In addition, everyone needs to bring their own piece of clothing if they want a tangsty t-shirt, pair of jeans, skirt, whatever. Also bring a list of the quotes you want on said clothing item. If you could bring permanent markers/fabric pens, that'd be great too.

RSVP as a comment, leaving your name so that we can get an estimate of how many people we can expect to show up. Or RSVP through e-mail with "Tangst Con" and your name in the subject line.

More to come as the date looms nearer.

Mid-Februrary status updates.

by sithgirl (12:05 AM)
Wednesday, February 15, 2006

We've now reached 600 posts.

I finally put in a counter for the posts just so visitors could keep track of them too. No one has any idea how many posts and comments we have. I'm not even going to bother trying.

The counter will probably be updated at the end of each day.

In other news, the Tangst Convention is coming up. I forgot to mention the alternative to meeting Friday is getting together on Saturday afternoon (as a sort of lunch thing).

Over the 4-day weekend, I'll be working on maintenance things with the site. Hopefully Blogger won't have too many problems or outages again. I'll also be working on the Archives. I want to be able to get all of January done, now that comments have been disabled on all of those posts.

We've made some changes to the template again. Recent changes include:

~ Adding the Hannah and PChis post to the "Popular Posts" section.
~ Adding another Affiliate site.
~ Adding two new contributors/admins - thewordofrashi and nanotyrannus.
~ Adding the aforementioned post counter.
~ Moving the Blogger button to the right side of the column.
~ Eliminating the "Previous Posts" section. 10 previous posts doesn't even last the entire length of the main page (3 days worth of posts) so that function was obsolete.

T-shirt Design Idea

by sithgirl (11:23 PM)
Tuesday, February 14, 2006

As mentioned in the previous post, we want to hold the Tangst Convention as a way to do the T-shirts so we can wear them on the 6-month anniversary.

I've vaguely discussed various ideas for Tangsty t-shirts on my blog and in real life. I've gotten some feedback and looked at a couple of places online for design options and pricing estimates. However, none of them really struck me as being, well, Tangsty enough. I guess mass production isn't really our thing.

So instead, what we want to do is completely personalized t-shirts. Every single shirt would be unique to the person who wore it.

In order to do this, t-shirt wantees will need to bring:

~ A plain t-shirt with no writing on it (the exception is your name on the label inside the shirt).
~ A list of your favorite posts or comments from Tangst or the Tangst-affiliated sites (just look through the online Archives or use the search bar at the top).

This allows for the most customization possible with the least amount of cost. You can buy whatever t-shirt you want, in whatever color you want, in whatever style you want, by whatever company you want. So instead of being restricted by my emo-black tendencies, you could get a pink t-shirt 'cause that's your favorite color. Or a bright neon green tank top because you want people's eyes to bleed when they attempt to read your top. If anyone wants to come but is too lazy to pick up their own shirt, let me know at least the week before the meet. I may be willing to do this for people if they give me the money for the shirt in advance, with the size of the t-shirt they want.

Additionally, since you pick and choose the sayings on your shirt, you can't complain that you didn't want them there. And you can pick the posts you liked, the ones you posted, the ones you could have posted (if only you thought you were articulate enough), etc. It's all about whatever you want. It's your shirt.

What we'd do is lay out the shirts with the lists next to them, and just have everyone go around writing the posts or comments on the shirts. Don't bother with the author or the timestamp unless you really want it on there. I personally don't, it's a waste of space. But it's your shirt so whatever.

The reasoning behind this is just so that you get a bunch of different people's handwriting on the shirt so it doesn't just look like you were bored one day and decided to graffitti a perfectly fine t-shirt.

If our plans for the convention come to fruitition, I'll supply permanent markers (definitely Sharpies), for everyone. They'll be in multiple colors thanks to their recent innovations (people with black shirts may be restricted to silver Sharpies because I think it's the only one that'll show up).

Because of this setup, the clothing isn't restricted to just tops. If you want Tangsty jeans, bring a pair - we'll be happy to work on those too. The Tangsty hoodie - to be super emo. A Tangsty skirt - for those blind dates you just aren't sure of. Or even a Tangsty hat - to show the sun just how much you hate its guts for shining way too brightly.

Additionally, if anyone would like to donate money for a t-shirt for Dr. Hoffman since he was such a great sport about his post, that would be cool. Depending on how much we get, I'd like to give Ms Tisdale one too.

More to come later, as me and the admins think of things.

First Open Tangst Convention - preliminary plans

by sithgirl (11:08 PM)
Tuesday, February 14, 2006

Note: Me and my inability to follow through on plans are notorious. I expect everyone (admins, contributors, and posters) to hold me to the following.

For those who didn't know, most of the admins and contributors (plus some long time posters we know in real life) had a Tangst dinner before the Key Club dance this past weekend. That was the first time the majority of the old guard got together in real life. And everyone knows who everyone else is now, as far as the board is concerned. It was a lot of fun, and at the dinner, we revealed the initial plans for the very first Tangst Convention in celebration of the 6th month anniversary of the creation of the Tangst website (September 14, 2005).

Right now, we're planning on Friday, March 10, 2006 at Pullen Park from as soon as me and the rest of the admins can get there after school until about sundown. The prompting for this event is the T-shirts (which we all want anyways) in honor of the anniversary.

Because what we'd like is on March 14th (the actual anniversay), for everyone to wear their t-shirt. Semi-advertisement, semi-pride, semi-yes-we-are-dorks sort of thing.

Everyone would bring their own plain t-shirt, a list of their favorite posts, and $5 bucks (to cover the cost of pizza and drinks). I'm sorry there's so much prep work involved for the people wanting to attend, but we admins are trying to have lives outside the website. Kinda hard when everyone you know is somehow involved, but we're trying.

Yes, I know, it's early to plan this sort of thing, but I wanted some feedback from everyone in the community. Does this work for the majority of area Tangsters? Would the non-Triangle Area Tangsters like to be included in this as well? Does this idea suck? Is it the best thing since sliced bread? Or Tangst itself? Should I stop asking myself rhetorical questions? What is that dot on the ceiling? Would I please be serious for once?

You know... that sort of thing.

So yes, please give me and the other admins your feedback so we can improve these plans to work for the most number of people. We're all about being inclusive.

As the date of the meet gets closer, a notice will be put up on the Tangst website itself as a reminder. We'll probably do this about two weeks before so people have time to check their schedules and plan ahead.

I'll explain more about the t-shirts in the next post. Promise.

Et Cetera

by sithgirl (4:30 PM)
Friday, February 10, 2006

Alright, first things first. Shout out to GreyHaveness for forcing me to get my butt in gear. Thanks to you I finally put up the Prose/Poetry site because I felt bad that someone else had to put it up since I was too slow in doing ours.

Okay, that's done with.

The Et Cetera Clause is the official name of the Tangst Prose & Poetry site. I wanted to try something besides being blatantly tangstful to be the name. But I still wanted the URL to be obviously affiliated. I was trying to figure out all the variations of "tangst" that are possible, but considering some creative play with numbers would yield an infinite amount of results, I don't think I can take up all the tangsty blogspot addresses ever. Le sigh.

I haven't decided yet if I'm going to post Hannah's Atlas Shrugged is My Life adventure series yet, but I probably will since that counts as prose. Hooray for fanfic!

If there are any posts that contained creative writing by the original poster that I missed in my go-through, please send me an e-mail with that post and the date it was posted. Or just leave that info in comments and I'm sure someone will get to it.

I'm tired after 3 rather tangst-filled days, so I think I'm just going to send out an e-mail and then take a nap.

Later.

*Edit: Apparently tangster.blogspot.com and tangsters.blogspot.com are already taken. Weird? I think so.

Prose/Poetry Policies

by sithgirl (10:58 PM)
Thursday, February 09, 2006

We finally launched the site!

Boy did it take us a long time. Let me just tell you guys first off that the archives are hellish to sort through. Finding all the poetry and close to story-ish things everyone's ever posted was hard work.

However, it was so worth it. I'm still amazed at how impressive the bodies of work by Tangst posters is. Extensive, insightful, and creative.

That being said, since the new site is going to be mainly prose and poetry, it is obviously going to need some different policies.

- The first change from the main site is that comments on the works here will never end. They can be posted whenever. I won't bother archiving comments - the authors can do that themselves if they so wish. Comments will never be disabled on any of the posts, except for the ones I put up as notices for outages and such.

- Second change is that the copyrights go to both the site and the author, author being first, always.

- The censorship on here will probably end up being even less restrictive than on Tangst. Artistic license is always something that'll be respected, but if it is damaging to another person, we do retain the right to refuse to post your work.

- All of the poetry/prose posted to Tangst will appear on this site unless explicitly stated by the author. Just add it as a footnote to the post - we'll delete the footnote when we post it on Tangst and respect the author's wishes.

- Anything that isn't poetry or prose will be posted on Tangst and removed from the poetry/prose site. That site is a haven for those writers because they were getting so much flack from other posters on the site for not having "typical" confessions.

Edits will of course be made to this as things come up. The dynamic nature of websites demands this.

Naming Success?

by sithgirl (12:01 AM)
Monday, February 06, 2006

I found this post by another blogger while I was procrastinating on homework by searching through random blogs. It's rather interesting.

The article is about how names affect the success of products and companies. I read through the article thinking about its relevance to Tangst. Of the 4 characteristics/strategies mentioned, I'm pretty sure Tangst just naturally has the first two. We've gained the third over time, but the fourth we aren't ever going to get.

I may be completely wrong on all of this, but I wanted to share my thoughts with everyone.

*Edit: I just read this article on the same blog, but it's more relevant. I'm rather surprised that in naming Tangst, I did all of the tips without knowing it. I guess I'm just talented like that.

January Traffic Report

by 龙年 (11:54 AM)
Wednesday, February 01, 2006

January 2006 proved to be a month of massive growth in popularity for Tangst. Below are the details of overall traffic statistics recorded for this month.

Monitoring Period: 1-31 January 2006

Total Hits: 9428

Average Hits/Day: 305

Lowest Day: 14 January 2006 (25)

Highest Day: 15 January 2006 (665)

In summary, Tangst experienced a gain in traffic of more than 275% over December 2005 statistics, which are available in the December Traffic Update.

One final statistic of interest is the population base of Tangsters. A brief study conducted during the week of 20 January 2005 to assess a sampling of traffic to Tangst for rough geographic region of origin. A small portion of visitors to Tangst were involved in this sample. The following results of the survey concern confirmed representation by Tangsters of various geographic regions:

Continents: 5

Nations: 23

American States: 24

Canadian Provinces: 6

Local Regions (Total): 100

I personally think it's neat how much Tangst has grown, and continues to grow. The increasingly diverse community seems evident to me in the wide array of varied responses and advice posters receive.

Relating to the study of user base: This survey was conducted using region-based tracing to prevent actual identification of individual users, and a so-called "double-blind" protocol was enacted to ensure that visitors would retain their anonymity in posting.
